Dog Daycare, Outings & Overnight Retreats by Luckydog (since 1998)

Luckydog is a not-for-profit, privately run sanctuary for abandoned pets. It is San Diego’s first holistic rescue sanctuary. Out of Luckydog was born ZenK9, a private, peaceful, doggy resort and exercise service that helps us support rescue animals. When you choose ZenK9 to pamper your pooch, you help Luckydog provide sanctuary for the special pets we’ve rescued.
ZenK9 provides a private, personalized, holistic approach to pet care. We can only accommodate a few new clients each year. We offer Doggy Daycare, Overnight Boarding Retreats, and Daily Adzentures for a limited number of La Jolla's luckiest pups. At ZenK9, your dog will have it so good, he will beg for more.
In what way is a ZenK9 retreat better than a busy Kennel or daycare?
Knowing dogs’ personalities is essential to keeping them happy and safe. A large daycare or kennel which takes in new dogs each week, cannot adequately assess how these dogs will fit in with one another. At ZenK9, we take precautions to ensure a smooth introduction of new pack members. Our happy pack consists of a very well-balanced variety of pups including large dogs and small dogs ranging from1 to 12 years of age.
Busy daycares are a great place for a hyperactive dog to expend a lot of energy, but they are not a substitute for walks. Dogs feel the need to explore. It is a primal urge and essential to their well-being. At ZenK9, we spend a lot of time in parks and on trails with the more active dogs who enjoy running, wrestling, and fetching. Special-needs dogs, seniors, and those with shy personalities can skip the adzenture outings and just enjoy the calm energy of our home and mellow strolls in the clean, ocean air.
Each zenK9 can have lots of one-on-one attention from a tried and true animal lover. There are never more than a few dogs boarding with us so every boarder gets individual attention. At night, there will be a comfy spot for Rover to rest his head in the company of humans. As for the idea of being locked up without a potty area for 12-14 hours at night (as with most kennels), that is never a concern here. ZenK9 pack members can enjoy 24-hour access to the secure, dog-friendly yard via our doggy door. Our home is their “home-away-from-home”. Isn’t that the way it should be?
Still considering a Kennel because you want to cut costs?
Please realize that kennels are stressful for most dogs. No matter how you set them up, or how nice they look, Kknnels feel like prisons to most dogs. Many dogs lose their appetite, lose weight, or contract “kennel cough” at kennels. These situations are evidence of extreme stress. Even if some of the dogs love the environment, it only takes one fearful, noisy dog to ruin the experience. As your dog’s decision-maker, you must put yourself in your dog’s shoes. Imagine staying in a fancy hotel room down the hall from a neighbor who threatens to beat you up during the day and screams bloody murder for a few hours each night. Do you think you would feel safe and rested after a few days of this?
Some kennel owners do not even realize they are jeopardizing the health of their customers by doing business they way they do. We cannot blame them, if they do not know better. However, now that you know better, you can choose a better option for your devoted companion. In our estimation, fewer than 5% of dogs are comfortable in Kennel environments for overnight care. If you own one of these dogs, you are lucky. If you aren’t sure, don’t take the chance.
Adequate rest, adequate exercise, and a happy environment are all important for your dog’s health. If you want to avoid vet bills, we suggest you avoid kennels and stick to specialized boarding facilities. What you spend on the higher level of care, will certainly reflect in lowered vet bills and reduces stressed.
